How to resize your signature for exam and government forms
Signature upload keeps failing? Here’s the usual size rule (often under 20 KB), how to scan or photograph a clean signature, and how to fit it fast.
The signature upload is the sneakiest field on any form. The limits are tighter than the photo — often 10–20 KB — and the shape is different. Here’s how to get a clean, accepted signature.
Get a clean source first
- Sign on plain white paper with a dark pen.
- Photograph or scan it in good light, straight on.
- Crop tightly to the signature — remove the empty paper around it.
Then fit the form’s rules
Signature fields usually want a wide, short image (something like 140×60 pixels) under 20 KB, as a JPG. Because a signature is mostly white with thin dark lines, it compresses very small — so hitting the KB limit is easy once the dimensions are right.
- 1Crop out the white space so only the signature remains.
- 2Resize to the pixel dimensions the form lists.
- 3Compress to fit the KB limit and save as JPG.
- 4Check the lines are still solid and not broken up.
If your signature comes out faint after compressing, your source photo was too light. Re-shoot with a darker pen and brighter light rather than over-processing.
