Inverting flips every colour to its opposite — white becomes black, blue becomes orange, and so on. It's mainly used to turn a scanned negative or a light-on-dark document into a normal, readable image.
Common uses
Scanned negatives
Turn a photographic negative scan into a normal-looking positive image.
Light-on-dark documents
Flip white-text-on-black scans to the usual black-on-white for easier reading.
Design effects
Create an inverted-colour version of an image for a design or effect.

Questions
Is this the same as grayscale?
No — grayscale removes colour entirely; invert keeps colour but flips it to its opposite (a photo negative effect).
Can I invert just part of the image?
This tool inverts the whole image. For a plain-background portrait, cropping first then inverting keeps the effect focused.
